Dr. Trusty: Total Eyecare & Eyewear Gallery – Changing the way you see the World
Dr. Kelby Trusty is dedicated to being your “total” eye care destination, offering one of the most modern optometric offices in the Denton area with state-of-the-art equipment.
But it’s the personal touch – not the impressive gadgetry such as optomap digital photos – that sets Dr. Trusty apart from many chain optometrist offices.
“I try to go above and beyond, and enjoy building relationships with my patients,” Dr. Trusty said. “I hope that trusting bond we create will last a lifetime.”
A fixture in the Denton area for 18 years, Dr. Trusty recently decided to forego being a “renter” and moved his business into a spectacular new building in Unicorn Lake.
The journey to his new establishment began 27 years ago when he was a junior at the University of Oklahoma. He was attending Career Day when he clearly saw (no pun intended) a forum by an optometrist and knew what he wanted to be when he grew up. He graduated from there in 1984 and from the University of Houston Optometry School in 1988.
“I love what I do, both the medical part and the patients,” Dr. Trusty said.
Speaking of love, his career played a major part in his personal life.
In the mid-1990s, while he was working in Dallas for a chain eyewear company, in walked his favorite patient to date: his future wife, Shari.
Shari was a clothing designer based in Oklahoma who was in town for business and used a short break between errands to stop into a nearby vision center.
Kelby looked deep into Shari’s eyes (naturally) and both saw a possible future together. After hinting to Shari that he was single by saying to the clothing designer that “my mom needs new clothes,” the two began a long-distance relationship.
Today, they have been married 15 years and have three children: Lee, 27, Jay, 25, and Jon, 23. The couple shares their home in Aubrey with Gracie, a Blue Lacy, the breed that is the state dog of Texas. Shari serves as business manager for Total Eyecare.
Another life-altering change that Dr. Trusty made in the 1990s was to open his own full-service optometric practice, providing total eye care in Denton.
“I enjoy the area,” Dr. Trusty said. “It’s friendly and vibrant.”
He enjoys the sports entertainment afforded by the two Denton universities, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University.
“There are so many fun things to do around here,” Shari said, noting that they are big fans of the social and historic aspects of downtown Denton and the surrounding communities.
Dr. Trusty believes in giving back to those communities. For example, you can bring your school-age child in on any Wednesday for a free eye screening.
He is an active participant in Communities in School (CIS), which champions the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life. Schools he is associated with are in Aubrey, Pilot Point, Ponder and Sanger.
He is also active in Interfaith Ministries-Denton, a joint civic-ecumenical agency that combines the efforts of local businesses, civic organizations and faith-based organizations to offer aid and compassion to individuals and families of Northern Denton County suffering from emergencies and financial setbacks.
A sports enthusiast, Dr. Trusty said it was a natural fit for him to team up with and serve as the team optometrist for the University of North Texas and many other local schools.
Dr. Trusty also cares for patients at both ends of the age spectrum, including and pediatric patients.
“These two groups may have special needs,” he said. “The staff here at Total Eyecare recognizes these needs and assists them to help make the best choices for their lifestyles.”
Dr. Trusty caters to all tastes, offering collections from top designers such as Caviar, Coach, Fendi, Gucci, Judith Leiber, Oakley and David Yurman.
“I am seeing a trend back from contacts to glasses” Dr. Trusty said, thanks in part to the growing number of movie stars and other celebrities who are sporting eyewear.
When not in the office, Dr. Trusty enjoys model airplanes and golf. He and his wife are boating enthusiasts.
